There are more rules and more ways to make a mistake. There are many types of essays that teachers assign. One of the most common essay types is the argumentative research paper. Without the right focus and direction, this assignment could turn into a total disaster. So, here are some tips to help you avoid a complete freak-out.

Make a thesis first


Students often struggle with figuring out what they are going to talk about in their paper. In an argumentative paper you are not just going to rattle of a bunch of facts. You have to pick a stance and argue about why it is correct. A way to combat against major writer’s block is to pick out a thesis ahead of time. That way, in the back of your head, you know exactly what to look for when you research the topic. You will also have an easier time forming your thoughts for the rest of the paper.

Do extensive research


One of the most important parts to a research paper is the actual research. It is helpful to have a lot of sources to make sure you know what you are talking about in your paper. There is never too many sources to have. It is okay if you don’t use all of them either. The number of sources should depend on the length of the paper. More pages means more sources. It is vital that you become well-versed in the topic of the paper. Since it is an argumentative paper, you have to find sources that support and disprove your argument so that you have both sides of the argument.

Make an outline


This tip is pretty self-explanatory. It is a good idea to jot down all of your thoughts in the form of an outline. If you do this before you begin writing the paper, you are less likely to get stuck. It is also a good idea to put any quotes that you might use in the paper in this outline. Organization will go a very long way.

Do not procrastinate


Lastly is the most important tip. DO NOT PROCRASTINATE! Procrastination will only lead to a frenzy of frustration and a paper of poor quality. No one says you have to write the whole paper the first day you get the prompt. But, do not wait until the day before to push out a 10 page paper.
